Are you a journaler? I am. Sporadically. These days, I’m not so much motivated to journal every day as I am to do it every time I’m INSPIRED. I always carry a notebook in my purse—one never knows when INSPIRATION will strike. I may hear or read or see something that suddenly blips on my screen. My antenna goes up, and my radar locks in on the signal. “Aha. I’ll have to remember that.” Before I can even draw my pen out of its holster—that familiar, still-small voice is already whispering, “WRITE IT DOWN. You might forget it.”

“Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.” (Jeremiah 30:2 KJV)

Does God care if we journal? I believe He does. If our hearts are continually tuned in to His frequency, the airwaves will bring His voice to us. He WANTS to speak to us. He WILL speak to us, no matter where or when, and we need to be prepared—to be a “ready scribe.” More than once, we may have all felt the sudden inspiration of the Holy Ghost as it interrupted our thoughts as we read the Scriptures, listened to a sermon, or attended a Bible study. A spark of TRUTH. I have remarked to myself, “That’s good. I’ve never thought of that before … and I will ALWAYS remember how that passage spoke to me.” Sadly, when I later go back to that same Scripture … the spark is gone. Poof! How can that be? Answer: I failed to write it down, and the inspiration evaporated. I think it may be the Lord’s doing—for I have felt the gentle scolding of the Master as He reminds me, “If it’s important enough for Me to interrupt you with a thought, it’s important enough for you to make the effort to WRITE IT DOWN. Remember, ‘the Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.’”

“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” (Hebrews 2:1 KJV)

Life flows from God—it is full of the secrets and treasures of TRUTH. Inspiration is God breathing TRUTH into a receptive heart, and it can happen anywhere that God is—which is everywhere. There’s ALWAYS something to learn. ALWAYS something that God wants us to see—to teach us. Take notes!! Be a ready scribe.

“My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.” (Psalm 45:1 NASB)

The secret is in our heart—when our heart is always ready to SHEMA. Do you know this word? When we hear the Hebrew word “shema” we think of the prayer in Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, (shema) O Israel, the LORD is our God; the LORD is one.” But the prayer itself is so-named “The SHEMA” because it’s the first word of this passage. Shema, in the simplest terms, means to hear, but it is actually much more. It also means to actively listen, heed, obey, and take action. So, to truly hear God—to SHEMA—is to accept and internalize His commands and to complete them through active obedience. When you SHEMA, you must take action.

But the interesting thing is that WE are not the only ones who hear, heed, and follow through with action—God will also SHEMA.

So, what would cause the LORD GOD to SHEMA? What would inspire HIM to take NOTES?

READ: “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard (SHEMA!) it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.” (Malachi 3:16 KJV)

From the beginning, GOD has desired to have two-way communication with Man.

  • GOD HEARS us in the same way He desires for us to HEAR Him: to SHEMA (by hearing, heeding, acting). “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken (shema!!) unto YOU.” (Jeremiah 29:12 KJV)
  • GOD SPEAKS. He transmits the message of His WORD by His Spirit INTO us and OUT through us. The VOICE of God is IN us if the Spirit of God is IN us. We don’t get a “private interpretation” of His Word, but we do all get a personal application. His Word sifts through whatever gifts He’s given us in order to TELL others what HE is telling US. It’s as if, when we receive the Holy Spirit, we get a sort of permanent “heart port” installed through which God Himself can communicate directly into our hearts. That is … if we are willing to listen—willing to access His wisdom.
  • GOD WRITES. Malachi 3:16 tell us that when the LORD “gave heed, and hearkened, he wrote a book of remembrance before him.” (BST) God is teaching us an essential lesson here: Remembering is important. To ensure we remember, WRITE IT DOWN.

Here’s the thing: others DON’T have access to the things that God is speaking to YOU … or ME. Unless we write it down, speak it it out, or both—it’s gone. So, WRITE! SPEAK! PUBLISH!

Dear God, when YOU inspire, let me be a ready scribe. I willingly give You the outlet You desire to have—through ME.
