When God Sings

God loves music.

He created it. Though it varies greatly from age to age and from culture to culture, God has planted in every person on the planet a certain love for music—as a part of human expression, communication and celebration. Martin Luther wrote: “When man’s natural ability is whetted and polished to the extent that it becomes an art, then do we note with great surprise the great and perfect wisdom of God in music, which is, after all, His product and His gift.”

At the very source, the wellspring of music … is God. He initiates it, He inspires it, He directs it, He expects it, He is moved by it, He uses it. “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” (Psalm 40:3 KJV)

  • God made the heavens to SING! “Sing, O heavens … for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.” (Isaiah 49:13 KJV)
  • God made the mountains and trees to SING! “For ye shall go out with joy … the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:12 KJV)
  • God made the stars to SING! “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? When the morning stars sang together … for joy?” (Job 38:4,7 KJV)
  • God made US to SING! “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before His presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:1-2 KJV)

All of God’s creation was made to sing because its Creator has a passion for music … and for singing! Not just for appreciation, but for participation. The Bible contains over four hundred references to songs, singing, and music—mentioned in not less than forty of the sixty-six books—including FIFTY direct commands to SING!

“Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!” (Psalm 47:6 ESV)

God loves music, and Scripture tells us that … wonder of wonders! … God Himself SINGS! Though perhaps it is NOT when you might expect it, for God appears to sing on the eve of great judgment.

Zephaniah is the last of the prophets before Jerusalem and Judah are conquered by Babylon, and the covenant people are carried off to exile in chains. His words declare a stern and ominous warning of impending judgment for Judah’s idolatry and complacency. Zephaniah indeed stood on the threshold of their disaster, but with inspired eyes he looked past the years of exile to when the plan of God would one day be fulfilled—when judgments would be finished, the enemy would be defeated, and the LORD would dwell in the hearts of His people. When “the redeemed of the LORD (would) return, and come with singing unto Zion …” (Isaiah 51:11 KJV)

In that context of expectation, Zephaniah gave witness to what would cause the heart of GOD Himself to REJOICE!! “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17 KJV)

What makes God sing? What gives God so much joy that He has to express it in a song? Though judgment MUST come, He anticipates with great expectancy our ultimate salvation. He longs to redeem forever those that could never save themselves! THIS is what causes the love of God to find rest and the heart of God to burst forth into joyful singing! Oh, how he LOVES His people!

A further example of our singing God is recorded on the eve of another tragedy. Just before Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray for the last time—just before His own exile to the land of death, hell, and the grave—what did Jesus do? Matthew and Mark both record that He, with His disciples, had “sung a hymn.” Before the scourge, the thorns, the nails—the Mighty God in Christ … SANG! On the eve of horrific judgment—OUR own judgment and the painful penalty for OUR sin—Jesus looked ahead beyond the Cross to the Resurrection! “Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame” (Heb. 12:2 KJV) … anticipating the new life that His death would purchase for each of us! Foreseeing that glorious day when the redeemed of all the earth would join in singing the Song of the Resurrected LAMB!

“And they sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and wonderful are Your works, O Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations!” (Revelation 15:3 BSB)

Can you hear it? The Day of Judgment is at hand but listen closely! The King of Kings is standing by with a song—He is getting ready to REJOICE over the REDEEMED!

“O soul, awake!
Soon the Lord will come,
And none can stand in His sight,
But those who are washed
in the blood of the Lamb,
When He comes as a thief in the night.”
