When God speaks, nothing becomes something.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” … from nothing. With nothing but words. Words mean things, but when God uses words—they mean MORE.
God said, “Let there BE LIGHT …” and there WAS light. From the mouth of God came words SO powerful that, when they were spoken, all things came to be. “In the beginning was the WORD … and the WORD was GOD.” (John 1:1) The essence and creative power of the Eternal Omnipotent GOD was unleashed, expressed, and manifested by … His voice. His WORDS.
I can imagine those words in the dawn of time rumbling like thunder throughout the newborn galaxies. Crashing like cymbals when the mountains were born … or strung together like a soft lullaby as each flower petal, blade of grass, and tender sapling emerged from the lifeless soil. I wonder if the words God used to make Man were set to a sweet and tender love song—sung as the newly made dust of the earth was formed into the image of “HIM who was to come.”
ALL things—EVERY single thing, from thin air to the most complex strand of DNA, was created for a reason and a purpose. It was spoken in the mind of God from before the foundation of the earth.
How did it sound? What language was used to voice the command: “Let there BE …”? Some Jewish scholars believe those first words were uttered in Hebrew, but in reality, no one but God knows. “The Word, which gives life! He existed from the beginning …” No one was there to hear that first spoken WORD. It wasn’t until much later that it could be said, “We have heard him, we have seen him with our eyes, we have contemplated him, we have touched him with our hands!” (1 John 1:1 CJB)
Was there an alphabet used in the beginning? No, of course not! Spoken words require no alphabet. They are sounds and syllables, tone and timbre alone, expressed in such a way as to convey meaning and purpose. When a baby learns “words,” they are not written. He hears the sounds of the words formed by the lips of his mother—and he learns their meaning long before he ever knows what the words look like in written ABC form.
Yet, isn’t it curious that Jesus says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First (LETTER) and the Last (LETTER) ...” (Rev. 22:12) In REALITY, He pre-existed any alpha, alef, or A … and He will post-exist any omega, tav, or Z. He was before the Beginning and will still exist after the End. “I am the first, and I am the last; beside me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6) He IS the eternal, endless WORD! The LOGOS … the creative language that needs no alphabet, and is not confined to time, space, or human understanding.
The wonder of it is this: the “Word of God” that we know and love and hold in our hands—bound in leather and stained with tears—possesses the same creative power as it did in the beginning. Before it was ever etched in stone, penned on parchment, or printed on a page—it was SPOKEN by the GOD who uttered the worlds into existence. Reducing it to written text in a book does not dilute its power, diminish its effect, nor should its force ever be underestimated.
When God speaks—HOWEVER He speaks—audibly or through the written word, there is creative power in His WORDS … as alive and clear as when they were first uttered in the beginning. When GOD speaks, energy is born, the void suddenly comes alive, tangible substance appears—and God says, “TOV! It’s GOOD!” We don’t have to understand it or force it to fit into our own human logic. His WORD, working according to His WILL, supersedes any framework we can imagine. When GOD speaks, words become matter, and solutions, and miracles—they just DO.
If God speaks TO US, it IS important—because there is POWER present. Power IN the WORDS. How can we ignore His voice? How can we feel powerless or inadequate to be what He wants us to be when embedded in His every WORD exists the power to accomplish whatever He’s asked us to do?
- When God calls, He gives the power to heed.
- When He rebukes, He gives the power to change.
- When He directs, He gives the power to follow.
- When He instructs, God gives the power to OBEY.
“Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath”. (Deuteronomy 8:18 NLT)
There IS creative power in God’s WORD, and when He speaks through us, it’s HIS power at work—not ours. “For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13 CSB)
What would God create? What storms would He still, what darkness would His light cause to flee? What peace, what comfort, what consolation? What would His words bring to life if you fully surrendered YOUR voice, and let Him SPEAK—through YOU?
