His name was Willie Myrick. Many have heard and loved the true story of the 10-year-old boy in Atlanta who was abducted, thrown into the back seat of a vehicle, and told to shut up. He had good reason to be scared, but if he had learned anything by going to church—he’d learned to sing. So, if he couldn’t talk, he was determined he would sing his fear away. And he did … for three hours straight. He sang “Every Praise is to Our God” over and over and over … until his abductor, in frustrated anger, threw Willie out of the car. It’s not unreasonable to presume that Willie’s life that day was SAVED BY PRAISE.

He wasn’t the first.

Jacob sent Joseph to go check on his brothers as they pastured the flocks far from their home in Hebron. Neither knew, however, that this errand of mercy would change their world … forever. We know the story well, found in Genesis 37. His brothers hated Joseph so much that even while he was still a good way off, they spotted him coming and were already conspiring to MURDER him. However, when an Ishmaelite caravan happened to come plodding down the Kings’ Highway bound for Egypt, it was Judah who stepped in and proposed an alternative for murder. He suggested that they sell—rather than slay—Joseph, allowing the merchants to banish him to faraway Egypt, while making a few shekels in the bargain. Though still a cruel plan, what Judah—whose name means “PRAISE”—didn’t know was that by saving Joseph’s life, he was preserving THEIRS, plus their children’s—as well as the entire nation of Israel. That day, their future was literally SAVED by PRAISE.

When the children of Israel later crossed the Jordan and entered their Promised Land, they would be forced to engage in many military battles in order to conquer it. The LION’s share of the fighting force of Israel at that time was the “PRAISE” tribe of JUDAH—76,500 soldiers strong—far and away larger than any other tribe. When it came to their FIGHT for the land—most notably at the Battle of Jericho—it could (and WOULD) be said that Israel, with the help of the LORD, was SAVED BY PRAISE … for the trumpets they incessantly blew as they rounded the corners of the city were not the trumpets of war but the SHOFARS of PRAISE!

There’s an amazing account in the days of Jehoshaphat, King of JUDAH, when that symbolism became real. The combined force of three enemy nations confronted the army of Judah. The king knew that Judah lacked the ability to repel such an invasion, so he called the people to fervent prayer. The LORD responded, “Be not afraid … for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chron. 20:15 KJV) King Jehoshaphat took the LORD at His Word—he gathered the SINGERS and sent them out in FRONT of the soldiers, declaring, “Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.” The Scripture says “At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the LORD caused the [enemy armies] to start fighting among themselves …” and their fierce foes self-destructed before their very eyes! The battle was won without lifting a finger, and Judah and Jerusalem were literally SAVED … BY PRAISE!

“I praise you, LORD, because you have saved me and kept my enemies from gloating over me. I cried to you for help, O LORD my God, and you healed me … you restored my life. Sing praise to the LORD … Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks!” (Psalm 30:1-4 GNB)

Here’s something interesting: I broke my forearm a couple months back, and though the bones are healing, my hand and fingers are still stiff. I visited an occupational therapist to try to regain mobility in my wrist and hand. She suggested to me that the most helpful strategy in getting flexibility back was NOT by doing exercises with my HAND—but in my HEAD. She said, “Your brain tells your body how to move, and repeated muscular movement creates ‘paths’ in the brain. When a limb is injured and remains immobile for a time (like in a cast), the brain starts to forget those paths of movement. To help your hand move again, your brain must be made to RECALL the pattern of your hand moving and flexing the way it used to. In your mind, SEE yourself playing the organ with your LEFT hand! Even if your hand lacks the strength and mobility to do it NOW, by seeing it in your mind, your brain will remind your hand how to DO it!”

This is an amazing TRUTH! The Scriptures don’t have much good to say about our imaginations, BUT we ARE encouraged to actively: Set your MIND on things above …” (Colossians 3:2 NKJV)

  • Are you in a dark place? SET your MIND as if you’re walking in the Light!
  •  Are you bound? SEE yourself as FREE!
  • Are you hurting? Let your mind SEE yourself moving without pain!
  • Are you offended? SEE yourself forgiving freely!
  • Are you unhappy? REMIND your tongue how to give God PRAISE!
  • Are you feeling lost, discouraged and overwhelmed? PRAISE God! Do it BEFORE you see your answer or your remedy! “Be RENEWED (first) in the spirit of your mind.” (Ephesians 4:23 KJV)

Begin your healing with PRAISE! “Every PRAISE is to our God!” Let PRAISE say to your soul, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalms 42:11 KJV)

Bless the LORD, oh my SOUL!! DO IT!! In Jesus’ name, I declare to my soul, “You are healed, delivered, and SAVED … by PRAISE!”
